Human Physiology of the Body Systems

 

This programme has been designed to run for 8 weeks to meet the maximum duration of a half term during academic year 2019 / 2020.  If you wish to be reduce the programme to meet the duration of the half term, the content chosen to be removed is at the discretion of you, the customer.

 

Week One – Levels of Organisation

  • Human physiology terminology & levels of organisation 
  • Anatomy of the eukaryotic cell 
  • Microscopic examination of cheek cells 
  • Biological drawings 
  • Structure and Functions of Tissues 
  • Microscopic examination and biological drawing of epithelium, muscle, nerve and connective tissues 

 

Week Two – Cardiovascular System

  • Introduction to the structure and function of the cardiovascular system 
  • Anatomy of the heart 
  • Dissection of the heart 
  • Structure and functions of vessels arteries, veins and capillaries 
  • Investigation on the effects of caffeine on the cardiovascular system 
  • Discussion of results 

 

Week Three – Respiratory System

  • Introduction to the structure and function of the respiratory system 
  • Anatomy of the respiratory system 
  • Dissection of the lungs 
  • Measuring the respiratory system 
  • Investigation on the effects of exercise on the respiratory system 
  • Discussion of results 
  • Diseases related to the respiratory system 

 

Week Four – Digestive System

  • Introduction to the structure and functions of the digestive system 
  • Anatomy of the digestive system 
  • Enzyme activity of the digestive system 
  • Identification of unknown enzymes in solution 
  • Discussion of results 
  • Diseases related to the digestive system 

 

Week Five – Nervous System

  • Introduction to the structure and functions of the nervous system 
  • Organisation of the nervous system 
  • Sensory and motor impulses 
  • Reflex Arc 
  • Initiation and transmission of the nerve impulse 
  • Diseases related to the nervous system 
  • Discussion

 

Week Six – Urinary System

  • Introduction to the structure and functions of the urinary system 
  • Anatomy of the Kidneys 
  • Dissection of the kidney 
  • Movement of fluids 
  • Diffusion and Osmosis 
  • Anatomy and function of the nephron 
  • Diseases related to the urinary system 
  • Discussion

 

Week Seven – Skeletal System

  • Introduction to the structure and functions of the skeletal system 
  • Anatomy of the cranial skeleton 
  • Anatomy of the postcranial skeleton 
  • Skeletal Joints 
  • Observation of muscular skeletal markers 
  • Diseases related to the skeletal system 
  • Discussion

 

Week Eight – Reproduction System & Menstruation

  • Introduction to the structure and functions of the male reproductive system 
  • Anatomy of the male reproductive system 
  • Introduction to the structure and functions of the female reproductive system 
  • Anatomy of the female reproductive system 
  • Hormonal regulation of the menstrual cycle
  • Fertility Treatment 
  • Discussion

 

NOTE: Some activities involve learners perform organ dissection and inflation.  All scheme of works and risk assessments are available upon request

 

Certificates are issued to all attendees of the workshop upon completion
